Government disagrees with Auckland Council's transport proposal

| Latest Auckland News | Thursday July 19 2012 15:48

The Government's put a large spanner in the works when it comes to the Auckland Council's revenue proposals for future transport infrastructure.

Imposing network charges via tolls, and introducing local fuel taxes are among the options the Council has put forward.

But Minister of Transport Gerry Brownlee says the council won't be able to impose a fuel tax as laws are to changed later this year repealing regional fuel tax provisions.

"They have to negotiate that and have an agreement with the Government, and we don't agree."

Mr Brownlee's office says tolls can only apply to new roads, not existing taxpayer funded ones

The Auckland Councillors also plan to add departure taxes and visitor charges to the list of options for transport funding.

Councillors today confirmed they're proceeding with plans to investigate ways of filling a $10 to $15 billion funding void.
