Free rooster adoptions this June

By: Jacqui Stanford | Latest Auckland News | Saturday June 9 2012 6:07

Auckland's SPCA is so chockfull of roosters, it's offering free adoptions for all of June.

CEO Christine Kalin says anyone who's keeping hens should consider getting one.

Even for people who don't have hens, she says roosters make awesome pets, although they can't be kept in urban areas because of early morning noises.

But they make ideal an addition on a rural property, especially ones with established hen flocks.

They'll clear up leftovers and help keep the grass down.

Ms Kalin says if you form a trusting relationship with a rooster it will follow you about, and alert you to intruders much like a dog.
