Serious blunders at Auckland prison

| New Zealand News | Saturday April 28 2012 6:06

The Government is being told to wake up to some of the serious blunders at Mt Eden Corrections Facility.

The prison is run by private company Serco, who managed to let two prisoners go before they should have.

And it's suffered a $150,000 penalty on its contract after another prisoner escaped.

Richard Wagstaff of the Public Service Association says Serco is also falling short on drug testing and prisoner management plans.

"Last time we had private prisons here during the last turn up of National government they proved to be more expensive and less flexible, and here we go again.

"We don't want to say, I told you so, but here we go again with more problems."

Mr Wagstaff says these can't be excused as teething problems, as there's no room for failure in the prison service.
