Boat intercepted off West Australian coast

By: AAP | International News | Saturday April 28 2012 6:13

An asylum-seeker boat, believed to be carrying around 60 people, has been discovered off the coast of Western Australia.

Home affairs minister Jason Clare says HMAS Maitland intercepted the vessel north-west of Ashmore Island tonight and they will be taken to Christmas Island.

The latest arrival comes as Opposition leader Tony Abbott re-opened the discussion about refugee boats arriving on Australia's shores in a speech in which he promised to take up the matter with neighbouring Indonesia if he became prime minister.

He also says he'll consider a double dissolution election if parliament blocks his plan to reintroduce temporary protection visas for refugees.
