On the streets of New York last night there were zombies staggering amid the canyons of skyscrapers while other partially clad hospital patients were groping at passers-by.

It wasn’t unlike the American Presidential election but it was the of course the national day of dressing down for Halloween that the Americans do so well.

Many of them would prefer to forget what’s going out on the campaign trail. They’re tired of hearing Donald Trump calling Hillary Clinton a crook who should be locked up and they’re sick of the former Secretary of State talking about her boorish opponent’s lack of respect for women.

What was once amusing has become nauseous says beat cop in the Big Apple Paul Rabinowitz who said in seven days the nightmare will be over while the rest of the world laughs.

But of course that could be when the trouble is just beginning for a country that appears to have put battling the Isis scourge to one side while their economic time bomb is ticking at home.

Depending on which poll you are watching they’ve either tightened or Clinton’s remaining solid or even that Trump had edged ahead if you believe Fox News.

This is how the Chicago Tribune in Obama town is reading it.

It’s obvious the American political system is breaking down. It’s been crumbling for some time now, and the establishment elite know it and they’re properly frightened. Donald Trump, the vulgarian at their gates, is a symptom not a cause. Hillary Clinton and Bill are both cause and effect.

On campaign centrestage is a man few had heard of before, James Comey, the director of the FBI.

They’re baffled as to why he told Congress that Clinton was again being investigated about emails that were found on the computer belonging to the seedy Anthony Weiner who was until recently with her closest confidante Huma Abedin. Ironically it was Clinton who encouraged Abedin to date Weiner and Bill Clinton officiated at their 2010 wedding.

But James Comey would have been damned if he did and damned if he didn’t make the investigation public.

He’ll be thanking his lucky stars that he’s just three years into a 10-year contract, meaning he’ll still be around at the next Presidential election. But will either of the current contenders?
