International research has found New Zealand kids have slipped down the rankings of countries with the best literacy skills.

Where we were 22nd in 2011, we're now 32nd in the world.

It's sparked a debate around why - if teachers or parents need to take more responsibility, the impact of technology, and if we need to make reading more important.

Literacy Aotearoa's chief executive Bronwyn Yates weighs in on what she's seeing.
