As he did so well in his playing days, former All Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick is defending his compatriot.
Kiwi coach Warren Gatland has come under fire following comments by Irish flanker Sean O'Brien that the British and Irish Lions over-trained ahead of their first test against the All Blacks.
England number eight Billy Vunipola has also questioned whether Gatland was even the right man for the job, despite not touring.
Fitzpatrick told Veitch Sport the criticism is unnecessary.
"It's a little bit disappointing, it's a bit of a dampener on what a fantastic tour that was and then we have other people chipping in who weren't even on the tour, so I'm a little bit disappointed."
