Commemorative services have started around the country to mark the centenary of Armistice Day.
It was on the 11th of November 1918. At 11am that the armistice was signed, ending World War I after four years of conflict.
The First World War took a huge toll on New Zealand.
Around 100,000 New Zealanders served overseas - 10 percent of the population at the time.Â
18,277 of those lost their lives.
Military historian Dr Stephen Clarke told Kerre McIvor it was the rural population that suffered the most.Â
"At the Field of Remembrance at the Auckland Domaind, there are over 1,000 sets of brothers that died, including 12 families that lost four brothers."Â
Dr Clarke says that there were so many "missing places" around family homes and work places after the War.Â
