Lynda Hallinan: Gardening

Lynda's top tips for a wet garden

  1. Sow cover crops, or green manure crops. You can buy 1kg bags of cover crop seed - things like oats and broad beans - and scatter the seed thickly over bare soil. Lightly rake in and keep moist until it germinates. The point of cover crops is to sequester nitrogen over winter, reduce soil erosion in heavy rain and provide a handy source of organic matter to dig in come early spring.
  1. Keep on top of raking up fallen leaves. They're a great source of carbon for compost making throughout the year. In a small garden, there's never enough carbon to go around compared to the huge piles of green/nitrogenous waste - things like vege scraps and grass clippings. So just pile fallen leaves into large black plastic garbage bags to make your own leaf mould, or to layer into compost later on.
  1. If you don't want to sow cover crops, cover bare soil with newspaper, grass clippings, hessian sacking - anything semi-permeable. This insulates it to trap warmth and keep the soil reasonably dry, as well as suppressing weed growth.
  1. Put your fertiliser away. There's no point fertilising anything while it's this wet. You're just flushing your money down the drain.
