LYNDA HALLINAN: Gardening

I went to an aerobics class in our local hall this week, and thus haven't been doing much gardening because dear lord I can barely move any of my aching muscles!

Remember when aerobics was all the rage for keeping fit? All you needed was a poodle perm, leg warmers, a leotard and a box to step up and down on and you could do it at home in your lounge?

This has got me thinking about the retro things we used to do in our gardens in the 80s and 90s too. Such as:

  1. The shrubbery. Remember the shrubbery? Pink scoria gravel (usually over weedmat) and a hodge-podge collection of conifers. Conifer shrubberies will never be fashionable again but they did one major fun feature: when you were a kid, you could leapfrog over the trees.... and be amazed to visit your childhood home and see a tree that was once at your crotch-height.

  1. The cobalt blue painted wall. Feature walls still seem super popular in houses, but not so much outdoors. It's a shame, really, because this is one trend that's actually cheap and effective. Shell out for a mural and you can turn a boring boundary fence into an incredible feature.

  1. Zincalume fencing. Boy, silver Zincalume was so trendy for a while there. But now black painted fences seem to be the thing. It's quite a good idea, painting things black, because it intensifies the effect of greenery.

  1. Crazy paving and pebble mosaics. I'm actually a fan of both; they turn boring paths into funky artworks. Wonder why no one does this anymore?

ANDREW DICKENS: Music

Sheryl Crow 'Be Myself' - Andrew's verdict: 8/10

Sheryl's finally got a bit of her mojo back.  Teaming up with the producers from her first two records, she’s back to being sassy.  Add some very contemporary lyrics about Russia, Elections, Trump, Twitter and clickbait and this is pretty fine.  And she still looks great!
