LYNDA HALLINAN: Gardening

If Cyclone Cook gave your garden a thrashing, the long weekend at least offers a good (long) opportunity to clean up... and if you escaped the winds and rain, you've got no excuse not to get stuck in for once last horticultural hurrah before the cold weather comes.

Easter is traditionally a big weekend in the garden. It's a chance to tidy up, prune back and bed down for the off season. What to do?

  1. After all the rain, the soil is very moist, which makes pulling out stubborn weeds a far easier task. Deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelions can be hauled out without too much tugging. Get any weeds with flowers or developing seed-heads out quick smart as they still have time to mature that seed and spread it.

  1. Cover your compost heap with a plastic tarpaulin to keep the rain out and trap any remnant heat. This will keep it chugging along for a few more weeks.

  1. Prune back tall perennials and shrubs hanging over paths, fences, retaining walls etc. Now's the time for that excess growth to come off.

  1. What can you plant now? Brassicas, brassicas and more brassicas. The beginning of the cold weather means that white cabbage butterfly caterpilars won't make it through their lifecycle, so you can start safely planting cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, kale etc without worrying about protecting them. Though these brassicas won't be ready to eat until spring, they will fill up your garden nicely with no effort required after planting. Space them 50-60cm apart (for cabbages and cauliflowers) and 30-40cm for kale.

ANDREW DICKENS: Music

Nelly Furtado 'The Ride' - Andrew's verdict: 6/10/

After the charm of her debut she hit the big time with collaborations with Timbaland.  Now that sound is out of favour and Nelly is struggling.  Interesting beats, half rock and half EDM but they swallow her fragile voice.  In an age where female singer songwriters are on the outer and big dumb EDM written by committees is king this album seems out of place.  I yearn for a return to the original sound that was so fresh and remains so.
