Fears of trade war between US and China

The growing trade war between the US and China could leave New Zealand in a awkward position.

Donald Trump has signed in new tariffs on up to 83-billion dollars worth of Chinese imports.

China is expected to respond in kind, with its own tariffs on US imports, like soybeans, cars and planes.

JMIS director Andrew Kelleher told Mike Hosking New Zealand needs the US, but it needs China even more.

"The East is in the ascendency. Hopefully we don't have to take side and we can just bob along on the fringes of this and maintain our trade positions."

The Dow Jones has plummeted following the tariff announcement.
