Out of the dairies and into pharmacies.

There are calls for tobacco to be sold only by chemists and tobacco stores, in a bid to further reduce smoking rates.

Tobacco control advocate Zoe Hawke, from Hapai Te Hauora, told Mike Hosking the idea makes a lot of sense.

"Smokers can still get cigarettes but it's harder to get because there's not as many pharmacies, and people can give you support if necessary."

Hawke said reducing access is a good idea.

"It's less around them, it's less normalised and will continue having young people who aren't interested in it because it's not in their community."
