The union representing rail workers is hoping intervention from local authorities will help resolve today's strike in Wellington.

The capital's roads are already clogged as more than 400 rail workers take part in a 24-hour strike.

No trains are running in the capital today and there are no bus replacements.

The spat's over upholding working terms and conditions.

Rail and Maritime Union secretary, Wayne Butson said he hopes Transdev will see sense.

He told Mike Hosking he hopes the Greater Wellington Regional Council will realise that bringing in multi-nationals was a step too far.

"We'd like to think that actually sane people will intervene and tell these foreign owned multi-nationals to cut it out and get on with running the business."
