A Sociology professor is calling for a review of the criminal justice system
Justice Minister Andrew Little has called for bail to be made easier to keep the prison population down.
New Zealand has one of the highest prison populations in the world - 220 out of every 100,000 kiwis are behind bars.
AUT Associate Professor of Sociology Tracey McIntosh told Mike Hosking the bail amendment act has had an impact on prison numbers.
"What Minister Little Should be looking at is really a review of that act but also right across the criminal justice system."
McIntosh says the vast majority of prisoners will be returned to the society so we need to think more about reintegration.
