A dentist says people going overseas for cheap dental work are coming back to New Zealand without front teeth.

There's been a surge of dental tourists as Kiwis decide to go overseas to places like Thailand and India for cheap cosmetic dental surgery.

Auckland dentist Tony Dey told Mike Hosking a lot are coming back with shoddy jobs that cost more to fix.

"This week alone I saw a lovely young lady come to me with some offshore work that had completely failed, like she was basically missing two front teeth, and we've had to put all that back together for her, obviously at her own cost."

Dey says you can't guarantee whether the work will be good or bad.

"Especially around your ability to have any recourse, can you go back and see that dentist if you have a problem? Yeah, all treatment in New Zealand is covered by ACC, ACC Aren't going to cover you if you go offshore."
