Tipping's all very well, as long as it doesn't lead to lower wages in the hospitality industry.
Tourism Minister Paula Bennett wants to see tipping for good service encouraged here, but doesn't want it to be mandatory.
E tu organiser Jill Ovens told Mike Hosking she likes the idea of a tipping jar because kitchen staff in a restaurant can also be acknowledged.
But she doesn't want us to follow what happens in the United States.
"You're mostly just putting 20 percent on. That means the consumer is subsidising the very low wages that hospitality staff get in the States."
Ovens said she once got chased for a tip by someone who'd carried her bag in the US.
