Don't expect Winston Peters to die in a ditch, over a referendum on Maori seats.

The New Zealand First leader will be seeking the referendum, when he meets with National and Labour today.

But Maori Policy Council chairman Shane Te Pou said it's unlikely to ever happen.

He told Larry Williams Labour has ruled it out, it will be politically divisive, and it wouldn't be popular with some New Zealand First MPs like Shane Jones.

"If they did move to abolish the Maori seat, at this point in time there would be a hullabaloo that would probably cripple the next government."
