A more mature Auckland could play host to the America's cup.

It is yet to be officially confirmed, but around $1 billion is predicted to be brought into the city of sails if it hosts the sailing event.

Former Auckland councillor Scott Milne told Mike Hosking in the 15 years since it last hosted the cup, Auckland's had plenty of experience with international events.

"Rugby World Cup is the easiest to think of but if you look back just a few months to the Veteran Games we can compete on the world stage for viewer time and for global participation."
