A move towards more government oversight of polytechnics is being welcomed by the Tertiary Education Union.

It's likely Auckland's Unitec will become the second institute to have its council sacked and replaced with a government-appointed commissioner.

Unitec is the country's biggest polytech, but is struggling under a continually growing financial shortfall.

Grey says these issues have been building over the last few years and they are pleased the Minister is taking steps to make the model work better.
