Proposed new rules for water supplies could put extra financial strain on the country's smallest councils.
The latest report into the Havelock North campylobactor crisis has revealed 700,000 New Zealanders may be drinking unsafe water.
It's called for compulsory water treatment around the country, alongside a new regulator for drinking water.
Thames-Coromandel mayor Sandra Goudie told Mike Hosking that would impose a massive cost on ratepayers in small towns.
"We've got one of the highest over 65 population in the country and that's the people on fixed incomes so any costs like those are going to be prohibitive for them."
