District health boards say hospitals have done well with a difficult situation during the 24-hour nursing strike.

Nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants are back on the job.

DHBs spokeswoman Helen Mason says a Life Preserving Services Agreement, signed in advance of the strike, enabled DHBs to provide emergency services.

But the Nurses Organisation says the dispute still needs to be resolved and there could be further industrial action.

The DHBs and the union will now continue their negotiations.

Otago University health policy expert Robin Gauld told Larry Williams one or other side is going to have budge.

"My prediction is the DHBs will have to increase their offer or the Nurses Organisation will have to have some very, very careful negotiations with their branches."
