North Korea appears to be backpedaling in the game of nuclear chicken against the United States.

Kim Jong-un had been threatening to fire missiles towards the US territory of Guam, but has since dialled back on his rhetoric.

The North Korean leader has told state media he'll continue to monitor the "foolish and stupid" actions of the US before executing any orders.

US correspondent Richard Arnold told Mike Hosking Kim Jong-un appears to be all bark and no bite.

"He warns he could change his mind if - to quote - the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous and reckless actions."
