A local businessman is fighting to put Picton - quite literally - on the map.

LISTEN ABOVE: John Reuhman speaks to Larry Williams on the Mike Hosking Breakfast about getting Picton included in the weather forecasts

John Reuhman is a member of the Picton Marlborough Sounds and Havelock Visitor Economy Steering Group which wants the town included in MetService forecasts.

There are currently 20 South Island cities and towns that the forecaster includes on its map, but Picton is not one of them.

Mr Reuhman told Larry Williams he can't understand why such an important arrival and departure point isn't one of them.

"We are the only land transport entrance and exit to the South Island. For some reason it is never featured on the weather forecast."

He said the importance as a transport hub warrants Picton's inclusion.

"Most people who are leaving spend anywhere from an hour to a day here waiting for their ferry."

Mr Reuhman said the town has the right infrastructure to support it's inclusion.

"We're just quietly working with the MetService.

"Port Marlborough has extensive weather recording gear and we have a gentleman here who has moved his entire weather station from Christchurch."
