Auckland's Mayor is playing down a perceived stoush between his council and the Government over where to put the America's Cup bases.

Economic Development Minister David Parker wants the bases built on the Tank Farm site, saying it would be much cheaper to relocate than the council thinks.

The council and Team New Zealand agreed to locate the bases at Wynyard Basin late last year.

Mayor Phil Goff told Mike Hosking the council is working collaboratively on the two options, including the Tank Farm one.

"I've talked frequently with the minister David Parker about that. As he commented a week ago it may not work out but it's certainly worth looking at because if the issues could be resolved it may be cheaper."

He said he's comfortable with whatever can produce the best result for taxpayers and ratepayers, and works for Team New Zealand.

"Because Team New Zealand is the other factor in this we have to have something that works for them, if they feel that it doesn't work for them, then they always have the option of going elsewhere."

He sad the key problem will be timing.
