According to newly released research New Zealand is becoming less religious. Only one in three kiwis identify as Christians these days compared with half in the census of 12 years ago. Only nine percent consider themselves 'active practisers'. Massey University professor of religion, Peter Lineham, says church congregations are thinning out as parishioners get older.
