Focusing resources on stopping Kauri dieback could be more effective than a complete Waitakere Ranges visitor ban.

Auckland councillors will vote today on how to control Kauri dieback in the regional park.

Waitakere councillor Penny Hulse, who'll be chairing the meeting, said a complete visitor ban would be expensive and impractical.

She told Mike Hosking resources need to focus on resisting the disease.

"That's what we need to focus on, how do we breed from those trees that are showing resistance to the disease and there's also some good stuff happening with phosphate injections."

However, she said people should respect the recently-imposed rahui.

"I hope that people think about where else they might like to walk."
