A technology commentator says a lot of credit card fraud problems begin when customers are sucked into dodgy websites.
ASB says it's inundated with complaints about fraud and payment disputes, with a backlog of a month.
Gorilla Technology CEO Paul Spain says you're almost always safe with big, well known website brands like E-bay, Amazon and New Zealand retailers - unless it's a look-alike scam site.
"Maybe it's a little Google ad that you see somewhere when you're looking for something, you jump on to that site, you put in card details and actually what they do is they swallow those up and sell the or otherwise."
Paul Spain says once you're in that position, scammers can go around and spend your money.
