A National-led government is unlikely to back a separate Maori ward for Auckland Council.

Councillors have agreed in principle to the idea of a dedicated Maori seat.

They're asking the Government to change the law, to allow the extra ward to be created.

But AUT history professor Paul Moon told Mike Hosking the idea isn't popular with National's front bench.

"I know when Phil Goff approached the Prime Minister about this issue, there was a luke warm reaction to it so I think on the list of priorities this will be fairly low at the moment."
