A US sports commentator's offensive comments about the haka are being used at a chance to educate Americans about Maori culture.

Commentator and former Fear Factor host Joe Rogan has apologised for calling the Tall Blacks' haka "stupid" during a podcast.

Former Tall Black and current Tall Black cultural advisor, Paora Winitana said some people will be offended by the comments.

But he told Larry Williams the team's using it as a chance to explain and promote their culture to people who don't understand it.

"For all these people who may not know, never met us, are unsure. It gives us a great opportunity."
