Winston Peters isn't worried about name calling - but at the same time, won't forget past slights against his party.

That's the view of former New Zealand First MP Neil Kirton.

Political analysts say National's alleged leaking of Mr Peters' pension details, and its furious campaign during the Northland by-election could make Mr Peters side with Labour.

But Neil Kirton told Mike Hosking none of this behaviour compares to how New Zealand First was treated by National between 1996 and 1998.

"Winston got a really bad deal from the National party and he won't forget that in a hurry. It's far more complex than some simple slight of late."

Mr Peters is expected not to budge on his "cast-iron commitment" to move container operations from the Ports of Auckland further north.

Neil Kirton says what motivates Mr Peters is the legacy for himself and the party.

"So the Port will be a factor in shoring up a New Zealand First bolthole up in the North," said Mr Kirton about one of Winston Peters' election bottom lines.
