A historic milestone many gay and lesbian Australians have been waiting for their entire lives.

Same-sex marriage has been officially legalised in Australia, following a divisive plebiscite and marathon 60-hour Parliamentary debate.

Couples will be able to lodge their intentions tomorrow, and tie the knot from January the 9th.

Nathan Thomas, who is waiting to marry his boyfriend, told Mike Hosking it's taken decades of campaigning to get the law changed.

"Unlike New Zealand, I know you guys did this years ago, this has been a really long, hard slog in Australia trying to get the politicians to make it law."
