The government needs to do more to stop child poverty claims an Auckland university professor.

The government will release it's package for families today.

It's expected to include a boost to Working For Families and an introduction of a winter fuel and best start payment.

Auckland University professor of social work, Mike O'Brien told Mike Hoskings there is plenty of evidence from around the world that improving incomes has a significant impact in terms of low income families.

"The critical piece has to have a plan to effect some change and sustain that over time."

O'Brien says the critical thing is protecting families and children from poverty.
