Fears the Waitemata bowel cancer screening blunder will stall a national-wide roll out of the programme.

The error was due to addresses not being updated in the National Health Index, and meant around 15,000 people were left out of the Waitemata DHB pilot.

Initial reports suggest more than 30 people have since developed bowel cancer.

Cancer Society manager Mike Kernaghan told Mike Hosking says while it's unfortunate, we should take a breath and look at what the programme's trying to achieve.

"Its incredibly important programme, this bowel screening programme and I'd hate for this to inhibit the role outright throughout the country."

Mike Kernaghan says there are more than 3,000 bowel cancer diagnoses each year.
