Positive signs that Germany wants to forge a closer relationship with New Zealand.

Arguably the most powerful woman in the world, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, met with Jacinda Ardern overnight to discuss trade negotiations and the missile attacks in Syria.

Politico EU reporter Matthew Karnitschnig told Mike Hosking the visit has attracted positive media coverage.

He says the two countries share common values.

"Common history there, there's democratic institutions, just the kinds of things that Germany is looking for in a trading partner, so I think this is definitely a relationship that Merkel would like to see flourish further."
