The rock lobster industry council is rubbishing claims that they want to hide what's going on.

The fishing industry wants to Government to change the law to prevent video footage and images collected by MPI from being made public.

The images, some showing dead dolphins, sea lions, and yellow-eyed penguins caught in nets, are collected to police fisheries activities.

There are fears within the industry it could damage their reputation.

Rock Lobster Industry council CEO Mark Edwards told Chris Lynch they are supportive of the images being in the public domain.

"What we're interested to know is having clarity about why the information is being collected, what it will be used for, who can access it and for what purposes, and that stuff is just not clear at the moment."

Edwards said there are consequences over a broad release of footage.

"Our concerns are about how commercially sensitive information and intellectual property are dealt with."

He said companies could use the footage to gain commercial advantage or find out competitors fishing spots.

The claims they want to hide what is happening came from Forest and Bird.

"They give a number of reasons for their position. Some of them are completely nonsensical. They cite privacy concerns, they cite commercial sensitivity. Well, this is something the Official Information Act deals with all of the time," spokesman Kevin Hague said.
