Calls for schoolkids to be taught more about Waitangi Day.
Auckland University Maori Studies professor Margaret Mutu says a poor understanding of history is part of the reason Maori are still so badly represented in some statistics.
She told Chris Lynch people would want to do more to solve the problem, if they were taught New Zealand history from an early age.
"It's the sort of thing you need to be introducing into primary schools, so every New Zealander understands the founding document of this country."
