Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa has announced a $4.3 million development - including five thermal pools and a water slide will open in late 2019.
ChristchurchNZ destination manager Loren Heaphy says it's about growing the tourism pie by growing the slice.
"We operate on a hub and spoke model, we drive visitors into Christchurch but then we make sure they are heading out into Canterbury [and] by adding to the hot pools and making them an even better attraction we expect to see more visitors into Christchurch itself."
"I think it will open up another leisure opportunity for visitors from the South Island and from Christchurch and just think it's an absolutely fantastic bow to the arrow for Hamner but also the Canterbury region."
