The days of private clamp owners preying on motorists could soon be over.

The Government's announced it's working on legislation to control wheel clamping amid calls to ban the practice.

Consumer Affairs Minister Kris Faafoi told Mike Hosking it's a balancing act between public frustration and the rights of private property owners.

However, he says a full ban isn't the answer.

"People who do own car parks want their customers to park in them may have no rights to do anything."

Faafoi estimates it'll take a few months before staff come back with recommendations.
