Australia's changes to its tertiary education policy are being called unfair, but students here don't want tit for tat action from our Government.

Subsidised education for New Zealanders at Australian universities is being withdrawn, which will add thousands of dollars to their fees.

New Zealand Students Association President Jonathan Gee told Mike Hosking it's unfortunate Kiwis will be charged double or even triple what they currently pay in fees.

"Australians, when they come to New Zealand, they pay domestic fees here in New Zealand, so it's quite sad that we're not entitled to those same sort of benefits in Australia."

However, Gee doesn't want the Government to retaliate against Australia's changes.

"From my perspective as a national student voice, it will be extremely hypocritical of me to say that we want Kiwis to have options and access to tertiary education wherever they are, and not afford that same opportunity to our Australian brothers and sisters."
