The Corrections Department says the housing crisis is making it difficult to find suitable accommodation for sex offenders.

Two school principals in Otahuhu are upset they weren't told 11 sex offenders are now living near their schools.

Corrections northern regional commissioner, Jeanette Burns, told Mike Hosking at least one of the schools wasn't informed because it is more than 500 metres from where the men are living.

"We have an engagement liaison officer and I will absolutely make sure this school is visited so we can talk specifically to that principle."

She says it's very difficult to find accommodation for these offenders in the backdrop of a significant housing shortage.

"We go for the very best option that we have and sometimes it can take 100 phone calls from a probation officer to find one suitable placement."

She says an engagement liaison officer will contact at least one of the principals.
