The Government is again being told it's not doing enough to decrease our dependency on farming.

It's set to pump $90 million into irrigation investments, in a bid to create more jobs and boost economic growth.

Massey University senior agribusiness lecturer James Lockhart told Mike Hosking, while he's a huge supporter of agriculture, the Government seems to be pulling the same lever.

"With an economy that's hugely dependent on agriculture, and almost nothing that successive governments have done in the last 33 years to change that, the quick solution I guess is just to apply funding to more irrigation."

Lockhart said New Zealand should focus on producing high-end products, rather than relying on continual expansion of the agricultural industry.
