Gay and lesbian activists in Australia are dumbstruck over the same-sex marriage debacle.
The Government has confirmed a non-binding postal ballot will take place if the Senate refuses to approve a compulsory plebiscite - a bill which is almost certain to fail.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he's sticking to his election promise.
"That we would not facilitate the introduction of a bill to legalise same-sex marriage until the Australian people have had their say, and we made a commitment to give all Australians a say on the matter of same-sex marriage."
Founder of the LGBTQI group Just Equal, Ivan Hinton-Teoh, told Mike Hosking the whole situation is "embarrassing".
"We know that opponents of marriage equality, regardless of the fact that we're about to spend $122 million on this postal vote idea, we know that they're going to ignore the result."
