Claims New Zealand's tourism industry is missing out on a lucrative idea.

Research from Massey University has found strong demand for airships in luxury tours, and even adventure tourism.

Massey University researcher Isaac Henderson told Larry Williams the combination of the New Zealand scenery and a comfortable blimp's cabin, could be a winner for tourism businesses.

"The idea of sitting having lunch, a glass of wine while you're looking out at something like the Milford Sounds, is really appealing."

He says following the Hindenburg disaster in 1937, which killed 36 people, airships as a whole have been given a reputation of being unsafe.

"They are very safe, there's a group in the UK working on a number of modern designs and they are much more controllable."
