The pork industry says New Zealanders deserve to know where their pig meat is coming from.
After going through select committee, the Consumers' Right to Know Bill will now only mandate country of origin labelling on some single ingredient foods.
That will exclude cured meats like bacon.
Pork Industry Board chairman Ian Carter told Mike Hosking most people don't realise the majority of pig meat sold here is imported from overseas.
"What's happening is up to 60 percent is imported and 95 percent of that product isn't even compliant with our laws, wouldn't be allowed to be farmed at the standards at our country."
