Today marks Chinese New Year - and it's the Year of the Dog.

Celebrations are in full swing around the country, with around 50,000 visitors to take part in the festivities.

China specialist from Massey University Henry Chung told Mike Hosking that New Zealand is the first country in the world to celebrate Chinese New Year.

He says that, using Feng Shui, one can predict if it will be a good year or bad year.

This means that those born in the Year of the Ox may have a better year than last, while those born in the Year of the Dog will have to wait until next year.
