Salmon industry leaders boast they could one day overtake dairy and become the number one industry in New Zealand
Salmon aquaculture is worth around $300 million a year to the country, compared to dairy's $16.6 billion.
But New Zealand King Salmon chief executive Grant Rosewarne told Mike Hosking says they can produce $25 million in revenue and 60 jobs, per surface hectare.
"In terms of using space well to get a good return for New Zealand, there's not a better opportunity than salmon.
"Norway has embraced salmon, it's their number two industry, they are going to replace their oil and gas industry with salmon."
Rosewarne said our salmon is about three times more valuable than the Norwegian product.
"We've got the intellectual property to grow the supreme species - the King Salmon rather than the Atlantic Salmon so we have all the potential to be the most valuable industry in New Zealand."
