Questions are being raised about the conditions on board international fishing trawlers, after reports a Korean vessel was a slave ship.
The trawler, the Southern Ocean, docked in Bluff harbour on Friday with the body of a dead crewman on board.
Auckland University researcher Glenn Simmons knows the boat and told Mike Hosking it's related to a vessel on which 21 crewmen died in Antarctic waters back in 2010.
He says there has to be a huge problem when you have one crewman dead, one in hospital and three jump over board to escape the vessel.
Dr Simmons says the problem is far worse than people realise and the worst offenders are from Asia.
