Prime Minister Bill English says he's not in favour of gender-neutral school uniforms.
PPTA rainbow taskforce member Shawn Cooper said many schools have acted already.
"Schools are responding to this. They're recognising that for the students, for whom this is a major issue, it can have huge impacts on their feeling of self-worth."
But Mr English told Mike Hosking it's just not practical.
"Imagine going out and telling all those parents who right now this morning are scrabbling around trying to find a uniform, telling them 'junk those uniforms, you've all got to buy new ones'."

The PPTA has also recommended allowing same-sex ball dates, as well as private and safe bathrooms.
Transgender advisor Kim Prance told Nadine Higgins school blueprints may need to change.
"As far as bathrooms, showers etc. maybe new designs could be looked at for schools, so that any remodeling when it's being done those could be taken into consideration."
However, Prance said New Zealand is making real progress.
"The uniform policy is a very easy one to make into a unisex policy for schools. That's really nothing much."
