An outdated school curriculum could be putting young people off involvement in the arts.

New research from Creative New Zealand has found participation in the arts drops off as children reach secondary school.

It's found many young people don't feel "creative" enough to remain involved.

Elise Sterback, the manager of Auckland's Basement Theatre, told Larry Williams that's partly due to schools focusing on subjects like Shakespeare.

"Shakespeare's not always that representative of kids cultures and a lot of them don't connect to British cultural history."
